Sheltering in place may be required where ever you are. In most cases, hopefully you will be in your home. You need to prepare for several circumstances and disasters including:
- Power Outage
- Earthquake
- Local Flooding
- Fire, including wildfires
- Epidemic or Disease Outbreak
- Chemical/Nuclear Spill or Terrorism
Plan so that you can shelter any where for at least 48-96 hours.
If your home is stable and can be lived in this is your greatest asset because all of your preparedness can be used from food, clothing, medical, sanitation without requiring you to make a decision as to what is most important and what has to be left behind. Sheltering in your home gives security, peace, and allows for comfort both for you and your children who will want and need to be assured that everything is ok. Being in your home gives you access to fun materials to keep the kids busy and occupied while you work out the problems of “what next”!
If your home is not livable but your ground or yard is accessible and can still be used prepare to shelter in place in tents, conex containers, or other temporary shelters. If you are traveling and have room keep a small tent or the tools to shelter in a wilderness area for the duration of a vehicle breakdown or un-drivable road conditions. Be prepared to stay in your car if possible
